Two words that mean spine-tingling sports action, delectable party foods, stylish celebrators, and fashionable fascinators: Derby Day. Talk Derby to me, baby — #TeamMaxies is back at it again with the best Derby Day party in Milwaukee.
Our party benefits the Hunger Task Force, Milwaukee’s Free & Local food bank and Wisconsin’s anti-hunger leader organization. Last year, our generous guests raised $11,595 to fight hunger in Southeastern Wisconsin. We’ve raised more than $10,000 in each of the last three years, and more than $50,000 in the last six years, to provide food to people in need.
Get your outfit ready — our guests certainly dress for the occasion. Show off for the photo booth and enjoy photo strip prints for a suggested donation of $5. The photo booth will be the entry point for Best Dressed contests, with categories including Best Hat Most Elegant, Best Hat Most Creative, Best Dressed Family, Couple, Gentleman, Lady, and Gentleman. We’re well aware that this year Derby falls on May 4 — “May The Fourth Be With You” — and we’re adding a best Star Wars-themed outfit. That and this year’s logo is all we’re doing as far as intergalatic goodies — other than that it’s just straight Derby goodness.
We switch out our menu to showcase our take on Derby party favorites, such as… well, Fried Chicken (obviously), Pimento Cheese Flatbread, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale Beer Cheese Soup, Bourbon BBQ Salmon, and Kentucky Hot Browns. You gotta have Hot Browns. Click here to see Maxie’s Derby Day 2019 menu (PDF)
We’ll be muddling up Four Roses Bourbon Mint Juleps, as well as slinging Oaks Lily and Peach Vodka Derby Tea cocktails and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, from two full-service indoor bars, as well as an outdoor bar.
Look for raffles, a silent auction, and fantastic prizes, including dining packages and catered parties from Maxie’s. Your entry includes a $5 “bet” on the race (correct selection of Win, Place & Show are entered in a raffle for prizes). Additional “bets” are $5. All Derby “bets” are for prizes only; no cash will be tendered. All entry, raffle, auction and “betting” proceeds go to Hunger Task Force.
Note: Maxie’s daily Happy Hour special will not be available on Derby Day. Maxie’s will serve its special Derby Day menu only on Derby Day; regular menu items may not be available. Maxie’s does not accept reservations, call-aheads, or remote NoWait/Yelp app check-ins for our Derby Day party.

As independently owned restaurants celebrating American cuisine — from Southern to Upper Midwest to classic American brunch — we’re excited to watch these narratives set across the U.S. We hope you’ll have a chance to explore the films of the Milwaukee Film Festival, which continues through Nov. 1.
If you’re heading to Maxie’s before or after a film, show us your MFF ticket or pass to get $2 OFF a pint of Good City Brewing’s Film Fest Lager through 11/1. Maxie’s, Blue’s Egg, and Story Hill BKC are Community Partners of these specific films. Check them out — they look amazing.
Story Hill BKC — “Michelin Stars: Tales From The Kitchen”
We cherish excellent restaurant experiences. These days, when everyone is obsessed with sharing statuses and posting food pics, Michelin stars remain a coveted mark of excellence. This film takes a look at what it takes to achieve this famous distinction, exploring Guide Michelin’s role in this “golden age of gastronomy.”
10/29, 4 p.m., Avalon Theatre
11/1, 1 p.m., Fox Bay Cinema Grill
Maxie’s — “Satan & Adam”
A celebration of the blues, the transformative power of music, and the friendships that develop when artists collaborate, Satan & Adam tells the story of a blues duo. Sterling “Mister Satan” Magee and Adam Gussow played Harlem’s sidewalks in the late ’80s and early ’90s. A celebrated debut album seemed to have them primed for stardom, but their rise was cut short by Mr. Satan’s mysterious and sudden disappearance.
10/19, 10 p.m., Oriental Theatre
10/21, 9:30 p.m., Jann Serr Studio Cinema
10/26, 8:30 p.m., Oriental Theatre
Blue’s Egg — “Daughter Of Mine (Figlia Mia)”
A young girl finds herself torn between two mothers in this stirring, sun-dappled drama. When Vittoria learns that her nuturing, supportive mother, Tina, is not her biological mother and, in fact, that honor belongs to the town wild child, Angelica, it kicks off a summer of simmering resentments.
Team Maxie’s is working on our next culinary collaboration: a whiskey-paired dinner featuring selections from Jefferson’s Bourbon. Jefferson’s is known for quality and for innovative and experimental blending and aging techniques. These quality and specialty bourbons — often aged in unique casks — will be an exciting match for a Southern-style supper. Four plated courses and a reception with hors d’oeuvres will be coupled either with craft cocktails featuring Jefferson’s mixed by Maxie’s bar team, or served on the rocks or neat.
For this dinner, our plan is to go “WHOLE HOG” — cooking an entire heritage breed hog and incorporating some of the pork in each course.
The dinner will also feature special pricing on additional pours of Maxie’s collection of Jefferson’s Reserve Selections. Sample 1oz pours available will include Jefferson’s Presidential Select 16-Year, Jefferson’s Grand Selection Chateau Pichon Baron Cask Finish, and Jefferson’s Reserve Pritchard Hill Cabernet Finish. Badger Liquor’s spirits ambassador will help guide us through the dinner and share insights about this unique whiskey producer.
Jefferson’s Whiskey Dinner at Maxie’s, Monday, October 22; 6 p.m.; $75 plus tax and gratuity ($90 total) includes 5 courses, cocktail reception, beverage pairings, tax and gratuity.
